Clay Between My Fingers

I began a pottery class with a group of wonderful women, all of us sharing a common interest in shaping clay and having fun. The camaraderie we developed was palpable, creating an atmosphere filled with laughter and encouragement. Every Saturday, I traveled a considerable distance to attend the four-hour class, a journey that became a cherished part of my routine. Each week, I looked forward to meeting up with everyone, sharing stories, and discussing our progress. Initially, everyone in the class was working on the pottery wheel, a skill that seemed to be the foundation of our pottery journey. I tried it too, hoping to find joy in the spinning of the clay beneath my hands, but it didn’t resonate with me. The rhythmic motion and the feel of the clay didn’t ignite the spark of creativity that I was searching for. It didn’t excite me, and I didn’t want to continue without feeling that connection to the medium. I spoke to my pottery teacher, John, who was not only a passionate potter but also a full-time Educational Teacher. He had a wealth of knowledge and experience that he generously shared with us. After observing my struggles, he suggested I try hand forming, a technique that allows for more personal expression and creativity. He explained that when creating statues and figurines, they need to be hollow to prevent cracking during the firing process.

This insight opened a new door for me. He advised me to explore some books on hand forming located at the back of the room and browse through the pictures to get a sense of the possibilities that lay ahead. Once I did that, flipping through the pages filled with inspiring images of various forms and figures, I felt a surge of inspiration. The challenge of creating a figurine without facial features intrigued me. It was a test of my ability to convey emotion and character through shape alone. The challenge filled me with excitement, igniting a passion I hadn’t anticipated. By the end of that morning’s class, I had made my first figurine, a creation inspired by the pictures I had seen, and I felt a profound sense of accomplishment. My imagination ran wild with possibilities, and I became the only one in the class focusing on hand forming. Sometimes I crafted small, delicate pieces that captured intricate details; other times, I took on larger, more ambitious projects that allowed for greater expression. Each piece I created became a reflection of my evolving artistic voice. I even traveled to the USA to attend a pottery fair, a vibrant gathering filled with artists showcasing their work. There, I enjoyed viewing various pieces, each telling its own story through form and texture. Although my style was different from many of the artists I encountered, I returned home with new styles and a deeper understanding of other artists' techniques, advice, and styles. The experience broadened my horizons and enriched my practice, allowing me to incorporate new ideas and methods into my own work. This journey into the world of pottery not only honed my skills but also connected me with a community of creative individuals who shared my passion.

I created a series of Victorian beach houses on a large slab of clay, each one meticulously designed to reflect the intricate architectural details characteristic of the Victorian era. These charming structures were painted in an array of bright colors, such as vibrant yellows, soft pinks, and ocean blues, which not only brought the houses to life but also captured the essence of a sunny beach atmosphere. Surrounding the houses, I carefully molded sand to add texture, creating an inviting landscape that mimicked the feel of a seaside retreat. The fine grains of sand contrasted beautifully with the glossy paint of the houses, enhancing their visual appeal and providing a realistic shoreline effect. Another time, I took on the challenge of crafting a whimsical clay glider, inspired by a beloved comic character who was depicted joyfully holding a colorful balloon. This glider was not just a simple figure; it was designed with attention to detail, showcasing the character's playful expression and dynamic pose as if it were about to take flight. To give it the perfect display, I placed the glider on a sturdy stand that allowed it to be showcased prominently, elevating its presence in any setting. The stand was also crafted from clay, painted in a complementary color to unify the entire piece, making it an eye-catching addition to my collection of creations. Both projects reflect my passion for combining artistry with playful themes, resulting in unique pieces that evoke joy and nostalgia.

After moving and returning to my previous living situation, I found myself in a position where I no longer had the adequate space to continue my beloved practice of hand forming with clay. This was a significant change for me, as hand forming was not just a hobby; it was a deeply fulfilling creative outlet that allowed me to express myself artistically. What I cherished most about this tactile art form was the intimate connection I developed with the clay. The process of shaping the material with my hands, the sensation of the cool, damp earthiness beneath my fingers, and the joy of painting the finished pieces with vibrant colors were all integral parts of my creative experience. Each piece I crafted held a story, a piece of my heart, and a reflection of my emotions at that moment in time. For those who are just starting out in the world of ceramics, my advice is to not be overly concerned if you find that you are not immediately skilled at spinning clay on a wheel. Wheel throwing can be a complex technique that takes time and practice to master. Instead, I encourage beginners to explore the various methods of working with clay, including hand building, which offers a different yet equally rewarding approach to creating. Always feel free to engage in conversations with your teacher or instructor about your interests and challenges; they can provide invaluable insights and alternative suggestions that may resonate with your creative style. The beauty of ceramics lies in its versatility, and the path you choose to begin your journey might lead you down unexpected avenues that enrich your experience and deepen your understanding of this ancient art form. Embrace the journey, and remember that every artist's path is unique, often filled with twists and turns that contribute to personal growth and artistic development.
